Forge is a set of Autodesk Cloud Services, APIs and SDKs for developers to create the data, apps, experiences and services that power the future of making things. The View and Data API allows you to create custom web applications that enable you to visualize and interact with 2D and 3D design data in a web browser or on a mobile device, anytime, anywhere.

We’re excited to have more students building amazing things with Forge. Tackle this challenge as a great way to try out the platform, have fun with a creative project in the Virtual Reality space, and win a prize for your efforts.

Announcement: The challenge has switched format to Instant rewards. The first students to submit viewers that meet the criteria will be awarded. If your viewer is submitted and does not meet criteria, we'll send you feedback to improve it.

Deliverables

Use the View & Data API to create a stereo viewer web application:

1. Get started with this interactive API guide. If you don't have a 3D model of your own, you can download a simple sample files from here.

2. Build your own web application with a single viewer (use the uploaded file from Step 1, and make sure the model is rendered).

3. Set up an option for users to upload their own model files to view and interact with their models (note that that Upload API has a file size limit, but you can support resumable uploads if you like).

4. Clone your current viewer to create a stereo view. To do this: Place the 2 views adjacent to one another, and make sure the user interaction in one view is duplicated in the other. You can add depth perception to the stereo view, optionally, by adding slight position offset to one of the views.

5. Host your web application on Heroku or a similar platform.

Bonus:

Use mouse movements or HTML5’s Device Motion events in supported browsers to control the rotation/pan in the viewer.
