At ComEd, we deliver affordable, reliable and safe energy to approximately 3.8 million customers across northern Illinois.  In December 2016 The Future Energy Jobs Act (FEJA), supported by ComEd, was signed into law and helps pivot Illinois to the new clean economy by growing renewable energy resources.  We also know that our customers need a clear understanding of how their solar power affects their ComEd bill.

Solar customers do not have a simple, all-in-one, way to see their solar energy production and how it directly affects their energy consumption and monthly bill.

Current solar adopters use multiple third-party services to view relevant account information, track credits, and see accurate performance data for their rooftop solar systems. They are left to consolidate this information on their own to try to learn the value of their investment. We believe solar adoption would increase and the user experience would be dramatically improved if we address this problem.

This contest requires solvers to design a concept for an engaging website portal or mobile application for solar customers.

Deliverables

Describe the concept you are proposing:

  • The value it will provide to the customer
  • Inputs required from the customer
  • How the customer would interact with the concept.

A visual representation of your concept:

  • Mock-ups of any screens, paper or voice mediums required for input or produced by your concept

 Examples of features to consider:

  • Power currently generating vs power currently consuming (Day, week, month Avg)
  • Power generated vs. Used vs. Exported to grid (Daily, monthly, quarterly, yearly)
  • Amount saved using solar vs. electricity (Daily, weekly, monthly, yearly)
  • Goal-setting and rewards for energy efficiency

Design the user experience however you think is best - just make sure it is intuitive and logically addresses the user experience/needs.

Submissions must be entered by 4:00PM CST on 12/29/2017. Your submission should contain (1) The visual component of your idea, which can be anything from a pen and paper drawing to a PowerPoint presentation, a video, or a professional software prototype; and (2) An explanation of the design choices behind your idea: what components of the dashboard deserve to be where, and why? Give us a detailed reasoning of why the user will value the design.

If you choose to submit a slide presentation, the maximum number of single page, standard size slides that you can submit is fifteen (15).  If, instead, you choose to submit written text, the maximum number of single-sided, 1.5 spaced, 8.5 x 11 pages that you can submit is fifteen (15).  Please use 12 pt type and the font of your choosing, and assure that your submitted text is easily legible.  Both documents may include graphics, pictures or other illustrations at the Solver’s discretion.

In order to be eligible for the contest, submissions must be entered no later than 4:00 PM CST on 12/29/2017.

Prizes:  During Phase I, the top 10% of solutions share $1,000, the next 15% share $400 and the next 25% share $200.  Additionally, Phase I judging will result in the announcement of the top 5 finalist solvers on the week of January 8, 2018. The top 5 solvers will be invited to continue to a Phase II portion of the contest with an opportunity to win a share of the $10,000 Grand Prize.  Phase II prizes are as follows:  1st Place $5,000 2nd Place $2,500 3rd Place $1,500 Honorable Mention $500 Honorable Mention $500.  Additional details regarding the specifics of the Phase II of the contest will be communicated to the Top 5 finalists.
